Shillong, in Meghalaya is one of those few lands that have the lethal combination of beauty and danger. The cliffs are steep, the gorges are deep, the clouds pass through you, the waterfalls amaze you, the greenery pleases the eyes, the culture enriches the soul. I remember staying there at my relatives’ place during a visit in my childhood, and some memories still linger in my mind when I go through the photo albums.
Because the landscape of Shillong is an epitome of the blend of natural beauty and danger. Lets take a sneak peak at the ‘Scotland of the East‘!
The roads around Shillong are known for their challenging curves and the edges which appear quite dangerous. The vegetation along the road is in abundance, the waterfalls greet at rather frequent points on your journey. The scenes would make you frequently stop for clicking some photos. Biking is a go for enthusiasts and adventurers! The options of viable trips to Cherrapunji and Mawsynram are added bonus. (Now, why would you miss out on the wettest places on earth? Everyone loves rains, don’t they?)
Shillong and its precincts seem to be blessed with an abundance of waterfalls. The Elephant Falls present a rather spectacular environment, complete with caves. The Nohkalikai falls is not very far from Shillong and is the highest plunge waterfall in India. Besides this, the Bishop Falls, Beadon Falls are some of the falls that are brimming with tourists.
The Ward’s Lake
Taking a walk along the lake, you reach the meadows of the golf course. Precious pines, ornamental bridges, flower beds and bird. Sounds like some dreamy scene out of those romantic movies? Well, here the scenes are set.
The city still has timbered architecture and its quite amazing taking walks through the streets. People here are mostly from the tribes of Garo and Khasi among many others and have their own ethnic traditions and culture to showcase. You would find handicrafts and food of a different taste than the rest of India. The Police Bazar is the heart of the hustle and bustle of the town.
The Green Hills
You can just slip out and explore the forested terrains, and literally be in the clouds! The Shillong Peak offers some spectacular views of the city below- both at daytime and after darkness. The view gets awe-inspiring especially after the sun is down!
