Are you stressed out? Is it because of the upcoming exam pressure or office presentation that has to be completed by the end of the month or is it that you are feeling stuck in your relationship status? Do you just feel like running away for a few days and breathe a sigh of relief in the lap of nature ? Then congrats, you are in the right site! Today I am going to tell you of the beautiful and breathtaking village called Mawlynnong in Meghalaya. It’s not so popular among the tourist spots of India yet but be rest assured that this small village will soon be the hub of tourism of Meghalaya.
Located about 90 km from Shillong and 92 km from Cherrapunjee, cradled in the East Khasi Hills, Mawlynnong can be reached by road. The nearest airport is Shillong Airport in Umroi, Meghalaya. Bagging the title of “cleanest village of Asia” from the travel magazine Discover India in the year 2003 and then getting acclaimed for being the “cleanest in India” in 2005, speaks a volume of how spic and span this village is! I feel so proud that in a country like India where people don’t give two hoots about littering the place, and are least bothered about keeping their homes clean, let alone an entire village, this beautiful place with abundance greenery and thatched huts has been adulated for being so clean.
A perfect runaway plan, what say?! If you like solo travelling like I do, you will definitely enjoy trekking this place. And if you are planning a family trip, this place won’t disappoint you either! Situated far far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and nestled in the mountain top and the continuous echo of OM Mani Padme Hum will surely relax even the most stressed out person.
A visit to the living root bridge, near the river Riwai, made entirely of the living tree roots is a must see when in that place. The village also presents a captivating view of a natural balancing rock, a strange natural phenomenon of a boulder balancing on another rock. Another remarkable construction here is the Sky view, a 85 feet high viewing tower, made out of bamboo. Stunning views of the village and neighbouring country Bangladesh is a pleasure to the eyes. Moreover, the amiable and the warm hostility of the villagers there will really make one feel light and happy and don’t be surprised if your heart purrs with contentment!
The village is enchanting, especially in the monsoons when there is lush greenery all around, with waterfalls paving the way to small streams and abundance of flowering orchids dangling from the trees and hedges add to the beauty of the village.
So what are you waiting for, grab your bags, put on your trekking shoes and hop into the next flight or train and just get enchanted by this small magical paradise right in our own country!
