Who even thinks of leaving behind their phones in the safeguard of their home when they plan to travel abroad?
A phone is a must!
Be it your parents, girlfriend, boyfriend, relatives, friends, we just have to be in touch all the time! But to do that in a prudent way, keeping a keen watch on the accelerating data plan tariffs is a crucial practice that requires a few basic tricks and tips to be kept in mind before you are all set to leave for your trip! And with this article of mine, you have no reason to worry as all important and trivial points will be covered here which are of paramount importance while travelling to a new foreign country.
Make sure that you know if your phone’s network uses CDMA or GSM coverage
GSM is globally accepted but CDMA is less acceptable in most countries. So right now, call up your network provider and verify whether you are using a GSM plan or not! If you aren’t, your provider tells you of all the necessary steps to be taken, which usually involves using a rented phone or using the special internet tariff plans (which are expensive but will save your money while you are on your trip).
Unlock your phone
Ok, now when that is sorted out let’s get to the part of GSM users. Unlocking your phone is very helpful when you are away from your homeland. To be explicit, it means that you can change your local SIM with an international one with cheaper call rates and data packs. However, unlock it with your carrier’s permission as otherwise you will be dragged into legal cases.
After that, all you need is a little bit of wit and turning on your Wi-Fi button of your phone. It’s cheap, its fast and you don’t have to care about the amount of data you are sharing online. So, when you have landed abroad safely, find a spot where free wi-fi is available, ask for the password (if required) and have a happy time texting or video calling your loved ones!
Turn off Data Roaming
Before you forget and before I forget about this basic tip, its better I mention about it now. Turn OFF all your data roaming, cellular data and your push notifications. Make sure you Google account’s automatic back up option is turned off. And even the automatic updating of mails should be turned off to save the unnecessary hike in bill amount. Checking all your emails and updating your accounts and all other important stuff can be done in the wifi zone or once you are back home!
Avoid making International calls
And until and unless it’s of utmost importance, stay away as much as possible from calling anyone who is from a different country. Even a one minute call, can shoot up your bills quickly. So this is the best time to use all the apps featured in your smartphone. Starting from Whatsapp, Viber, FB messenger to Skype and Line, all these apps will help you cut down costs of calling and international texting. So find your Wi-fi spot or buy an unlimited international pack and see how all the complaints that your family keeps making about you not being in touch with them vanishes!
