Gokarna is the typical temple town, resplendent with temples, deities and pilgrims. But there’s a slight twist in the tale! The rustic and underdeveloped town has attracted many westerners who have settled down as hippies.
Find Inner Peace
Most of the people here- hippies and locals, included are usually not doing much and the total environment is quite laid back. You can often find hippies lying on the beaches for hours, like there’s no end to it. People relaxing at coffee shops, having chai. No one bothers to disrupt your thoughts because everyone’s too busy with their own. You can find yourself some space, introspect and relish the peace! (Maybe, Po from Kung Fu Panda found his inner peace here!)
You’ll find Yogis- yoga enthusiasts, learners and teachers performing their exercises, oblivious to the surroundings. Of course, you can try and learn some valuable yoga postures from these people, or if you know, you can practice your own- on the beaches at sunrise.
Like said, there are plenty of beaches to lay upon, relaxing- Gokarna beach (also known as Indian Beach), Main Beach, Kuddle Beach, Om Beach, Half moon Beach, Paradise Beach (also known as Full moon) and Nirvana beach. The Nirvana beach is a 3km stretch of white sand.
In The Religious Spirit
Gokarna is one of the 7 holy pilgrimage centres in the Hindu religion. Mahabaleshwar Temple (Maha: great, bal: strength) is a famous Shiva Temple while Maha Ganapathi Temple, Uma Maheshwara Temple, Bhadrakali Temple are some of the major temples that worship other deities. The Shiva Ratri is celebrated in a grand manner and is a good time to visit.
You can always take a dip in the public baths that are in the center of the town. If you’re visiting some place, why not soak in its flavors? That’s what the hippies who bathe here seem to tell themselves!
So here’s Gokarna- a temple town with hippie flavor. A town that respects your peace, embraces your solitude and deserves your visit.
