Indeed, when you truly want to enjoy the interior magnificence of a state, then there’s nothing better than the state festival itself. Karnataka being home to lots of hearty dance styles that not only imbibe diversity within themselves, but are the re presenters of our nations’s legacy, is the state which organizes an annual State festival christened “Mysore Dasara“.
It’s the “Nadahabba” of Karnataka or you can simply say the most glorious state festival. Being organised through nine festive nights before the fall of “Dusshera”, the festival is similar to what we call in North India “Navratras” which mean nine special nights that are dedicated to our gods. The carnival marks the anniversary of the biggest event of the Hindu Mythology wherein evil lord Ravana was done to death by the god Rama and his acquaintances. The festival comes up with the feeling of victory of good over evil.
The festival usually includes a very elaborate fair with a prosperous fair all around the key parts of the city which also attracts thousands of foreign tourists and locals. The festival is believed to have begun in the 15th Century and since then it has been evolving significantly each and every following year.
The main attraction of the ten-day Mysore Dasara festival is the glorious Mysore Palace which is illuminated magnificently and daily with approximately 1 lakh (100,000) light bulbs from 7 pm to 10 pm on all days of the festival. Nearly INR 1 crore (Rs. 10,000,000) every year is spent towards maintenance of its illumination alone.
Moreover, the fair involves an exhibition of great talents within the state and its neighboring areas. It also embeds within itself an exhibition of the prestigious temples of Mysore and it’s splendorous handicraft, some which is crafted for sale and some of it is antique and are kept as show-pieces. The delightful serenity of the festival is the opulence of it’s theme and it’s marvelous scenario. It’s open to general public and is really worth visiting.
