Three must- visit places famous for the temples in them and high on the pilgrim’s circuit are Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar, and Maheshwar, all located close to Ujjain and accessible from Indore which is 56.4 km away.
One of the primary concerns is transportation. Visiting temples can take an unspecified amount of time due to the religious practices involved. It is hence highly recommended that the circuit is done by hiring an Indore to Ujjain taxi service. This provides flexibility and allows you to spend time where you prefer to, take in a few local sights, visit places of interest, do some shopping and enjoy the privacy of travel in an AC chauffeured car of your choice. There are many places of interest en route Ujjain from Indore.
This is the site of one of the 12 Jyotirling sacred places of visit for Hindus. There are five aartis in a day the most important one being the Bhasma Aarti using ashes from funeral pyres. Dress code is strictly observed, and footwear needs to be kept in rental lockers outside the temple. Entry can be booked online and the second Aarti has lesser number of people enabling easy darshan.
Ujjain has many links to history, culture, and religion from ancient times. It is considered a religious place and most Hindus flock here for the Kumbh Mela which is held on the banks of the River Shipra once in 12 years. There are a lot of vegetarian hotels and shops which sell Indian snacks like Samosa, Aloo paratha, Kachori, Poha etc. which are must-try street-food dishes.
The river Narmada forms an Om-shaped island called Mandhata or Shivapuri by dividing into two tributaries. Hence the place was named Omkareshwar. There are two temples Omkareshwar and Amareshwar that would be on any pilgrimage list of temples. Located 12 miles from Mortakka it is best accessed by cab.
The Omkareshwar Temple is dedicated to Annapurna and Ganesha. The ling idol here is supposed to be a natural formation floating in the water. There is no idol of Shiva in the temple. However, an idol of Lord Shiva is placed on top of the temple. The temple on the island has to be accessed by ferry from the banks of the river. Kartik Poornima is a festival organized here drawing pilgrims from world-over. The temple is built in Nagara style.
Maheshwar is 113 km from Ujjain and renowned worldwide for the Maheshwari sarees originating here. Places to visit are the Ghat, various temples, and the Fort. The scenic beauty during sunrise and sunset from the banks of the River Narmada is worth the visit and most pilgrims use this place as a stop-over when doing the pilgrim tour of the Omkareshwar and Mahakaleshwar temples.
Some of the many temples here are the Ahilyabai Temple, Jagannath Dham Mandir, Rajrajeshwar Temple, Pandarinath Temple, Narmada Mandir, Akhileshwar Temple and the Cintamani Ganapathi Mandir.
When out on a 2 to 3-day pilgrim tour it is recommended that the best option to complete the pilgrim’s circuit of Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar, Maheshwar temples is to hire a chauffeur driven cab from a reputed car rental like Savaari.com.
